Basic, Gaunt set the pace

Australian duo target Open qualification

Neven Basic and Chris Gaunt shared the first-round lead in the Australasian final qualifying event for The Open Championship.

With three places in July's Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes up for grabs, the Australian duo both carded three-under-par rounds of 69 at the Kingston Heath course in Melbourne.

Among a group of eight players just one stroke behind were Kurt Barnes, Aaron Townsend and David Bransdon, while Terry Pilkadaris (71), Ashley Hall (72), James Nitties (72), Peter Senior (72) and Peter Lonard (73) were all within touch.

Basic is looking forward to tomorrow's final round and is remaining hopeful of winning a spot in what would be the first major tournament of his career.

"This is my third go at qualifying, I missed by one about four years ago which hurt," Basic said.

"It would be awesome to play in a major, it's something that you have watched on television since you are 10 or 12 years of age so to actual get to play would be fantastic.

"To play in such a historic place with the best players in the world would be fantastic."
Veteran Craig Parry, who finished tied for fourth in the Open at Carnoustie in 1999, struggled on the greens in his opening round in Melbourne and signed for a two-over 74. - http://www1.skysports.com
