Top American golfer Dustin Johnson may not have qualified for the final round of the individual professional event of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, but he turned up again at the Old Course regardless, to help younger brother Austin secure a top ten finish in the Team Championship.
The brothers, both making their tournament debut, finished in seventh position overall for the team competition on 32-under-par, eight shots behind leading pair Nick Dougherty and British radio presenter Chris Evans.
There is no prize money for the amateur but the professional partners who finish in the top 20 of the team competition win between US$50,000 and US$5,000. Dustin, who is accustomed to playing for significantly larger prize purses, said: “There was never any chance that I wouldn’t have played today. I may not have qualified for the professional tournament, but my brother has played brilliantly all week, so of course I was going to play for him. I wouldn’t have let him down. It was awesome fun playing together. It would have been great if I had also played well and been in contention for the professional event.”
Brother Austin, who is currently a student at The College of Charleston, added: “I’ve had the most incredible time. Dustin is the best big brother for inviting me to play with him, although it turns out I carried us through the tournament for most of the week, so I’d hope to be invited back. Seriously though, I’m sure my dad would love to play in this tournament too, so I imagine he’ll return with Dustin next year. I’ve had the time of my life and this is an experience I will cherish forever. We’re off to have a few beers and celebrate our top ten finish now.” - http://www.alfreddunhilllinks.com
